TVU's Cotton Campaign: The world looks to India
During last season 2009/2010 the prices of cotton yarns rose globally even up to 80% until summer 2010. Reasons therefore are speculative transactions at the stock exchange, unfavourable rate of EURO/USD and most notably because of the huge supply gap of 3 million tons of raw cotton.
Though during the current harvest season 2010/2011 this gap became considerably smaller, the speculative transactions, exhausted state reserves and restrictive regulations in India push the prices even further. Since the beginning of December new sales for cotton yarn export were stopped to protect the domestic processing textile industry. In the meantime new registrations for determined quantities are permitted again but the details are not confirmed by official authorities yet. more...
